Letter from Jamestown

Dear Friends,

It has been a while ever since I wrote a letter to you. I had a hard time sending this letter to you. I hope you are fine and happy over there. I was one of the first settlers to settle in Jamestown on the first three ships, which our company sent.

We started poorly there without any materials and any experience. Our money making dream did not go as planned. Jamestown was full of marshes diseases. Two–thirds of the colonist died. Luckily, a good fellow named Captain John Smith complained that the colonist was not trying as hard as they could. Therefore, he led the colony and the situation temporarily improved. We also received helped from Powhatan Confederacy, which was led by Wahunsonacock.

In 1609, 400 more settlers arrived in Jamestown. Unfortunately, Smith had to leave and without a strong leader, our colony went down. Diseases strucked again. An after a year, only 60 colonist were left and I am one of them. Until now, we do not know what will happen next. I am glad that you all did not follow me here to Jamestown for money purposes. I plan to go back as soon as possible. Life here is very hard, I wish there woulld be a miracle. We are lack of food and the water here is too salty to drink. I hope our friendship with Powhatan will last long. Otherwise, we will die. Send my regards to others and pray for me that I will arrive back there safely. Till then, goodbye.

Your Sincerely,

James Edward
